INTRODUCTION
This 76-page eBook provides a detailed account of building, texturing and lighting the interior of a Gothic church based upon a concept painting. This series begins with the key principles and techniques used to model the environment before moving on to a chapter dedicated to creating a gargoyle in ZBrush – the focal point in the scene. Here the author starts by creating a rough body using ZSpheres and move through the numerous sculpting phases, modeling the details for each part of the character and highlighting the various brushes and tools used throughout. The final chapters cover texturing, lighting and rendering the scene, along with post-production in Photoshop and culminate in a stylish 3D version of the original concept.

CONTENTS
Chapter 1 - Modeling the interior
This opening chapter outlines some of the prominent approaches to building the church interior. We cover some of the key methods and modifiers responsible for creating the scene and core geometry.
Chapter 2 - Sculpting a Gargoyle in ZBrush
Chapter 2 focuses on the creation of the gargoyle which will be mounted on one of the church’s columns. This chapter orientates around ZBrush and its powerful sculpting tools and shows how a detailed model can evolve from simple ZSpheres.
Chapter 3 - Texturing
This part details the texturing phase of the series and deals with mapping and unwrapping key areas of geometry alongside the gargoyle.
Chapter 4 - Lighting and rendering
Lighting and rendering is the focus of this chapter. Light rigs and a variety of render passes are explained in readiness for the final chapter.
Chapter 5 - Post-production in Photoshop
The final chapter of this tutorial covers how the various render passes are composited in Photoshop to create a final render. An account of some of Photoshop’s tools show how versatile this approach can be and show the value of multiple passes for post-production.
REVIEWS
- Extremely useful, brief for texturing, recommended for post processing aspect. Review by Sean

Like many tutorials, this lacks fine details which you will need to find elsewhere. In saying that, this tutorial is well worth the money. It is aimed at the intermediate to advanced graphics artist.Value
The ebook is split into five chapters:
1. Modelling the interior
The modeling techniques are helpful, different to how I would have modeled previously and will be useful in speeding up my workflow. To learn to model architecture and other hard surface geometry more efficiently, this chapter is extremely helpful.
2. Sculpting a gargoyle in Zbrush
Several pages are devoted to the modeling of a gargoyle sculpture entirely in zbrush by a second tutor. He shows how to sculpt, beginning with a zsphere to a detailed, anatomically correct sculpture.
3. Texturing
UV mapping in Max is briefly covered as well as texturing in Photoshop. The textures and uv maps are quite basic, showing a fundamental understanding of this part of a cg artist's workflow.
4. Lighting and rendering
Covers render passes in quite a lot of detail, including zdepth, AO, colour, volumetric and specular passes. Also, a simple lighting setup is included.
5. Post-processing in Photoshop
An area where I've struggled to find tutorials which cover this aspect of the workflow in enough detail to be considered useful. This tutorial is worth the money for this chapter and the previous chapter alone, for anyone serious about breaking into the cg industry.
In conclusion, the tutorial fails to be entirely comprehensive in explaining everything in minute detail. Regardless, these techniques can be found elsewhere and usually for free on websites which include YT. For intermediate and advanced artists looking to step up to the next level and gain the edge over other aspiring professional artists, this is highly recommended.
(Posted on 16/01/2013) - very helpful for learning the foundations Review by Ryan Magraw

I found this tutorial very helpful for learning the foundations of architectural modeling in 3DS Max. Although I did find sections in the tutorial that were unclear and out of date. For instance, in one particular part of the tutorial you are asked to perform a loft modifier, but in the newer versions of max this modifier does not exist. Another instance was in the lighting section. It seemed that it was very brief and I wasn't able to achieve the same results as shown in the tutorial. But other than that, the modeling section was great.Value
(Posted on 16/08/2010) - a total bargain Review by Midge Spencer

This ezine was a total bargain for me in terms of content. As a beginner with Max with a passion for Medieval and Gothic architecture I had struggled to find tutorials which showed the techniques for creating gothic forms such as vaulted ceilings, arched windows and the like. This publication has all I needed and more beside. Highly recommended.Value
