- Outstanding! Review by Carlo
- Excellent book for the beginning sculptor Review by Sandy
It starts out by discussing various sculpting materials and solvents and then goes on to all the different tools needed and how they are used. I appreciated the quick discussion of health and safety. Human anatomy gets a brief overview but you may want to refer to other sources for more in-depth information.
The meat of the book is the projects. Each one gets a step by step description from start to finish, from tools used and building the armature to finishing the model (very little discussion of initial design work/sketches). Each step of the process is enhanced with detailed photographs of the great variety of techniques involved. As this is a book on sculpture, no info on molding or casting is included. Note, although there is good variety in the 5 projects, they are for the most part based on human-type anatomy. But, obviously, all the techniques taught can be applied to any sculptures you are interested in creating.
As an introduction, this book is chock full of information and will be inspiring to anyone who wants to get started in clay sculpture.
